The Wall of Separation

A Christian family in central Virginia used a religious group run by Jerry Falwell to force their school to allow distribution of religious fliers to the children. A pagan group in the same area took advantage of the newly created loophole and distributed fliers of their own. Now the religious right is fuming mad...

Heh... What's good for the goose is good for the gander? :) Actually, in this case, neither was good. But I'm glad the pagans took the initiative to make a point.

Neat. Maybe a good snowball fight will come out of it. :)

I hope every possible and impossible religion, life view and lifestyle group follows their example. That might set an example and make them think twice in future.

Being the father of three I sincerely hope this example might put an end to all religions trying to reach my children through the school. Don't get me wrong, my children will be educated in the forum of religion and will know a summary of "major" religions' beliefs. But in no way do I endorse the idea that a place that I send my children to for education shall be trusted with a subject so far reaching in depth as religion. Irregardless of whether the subject matter will be taught on public facilities or by public faculty, the fact remains that my children are naturally trusting in those who are at the head of the class and material that finds its way into their backpack while in school. The whole idea stinks to me!!!

Christians don't want religious flyers in school, they only want CHRISTIAN religious flyers in schools. They don't want prayer in school, they only want CHRISTIAN prayer in schools. Sorry folks... It don't work that way.

Not all Christians. There are plenty that respect the separation and understand its importance but I agree wholeheartedly with your point.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

Right... I didn't mean to overgeneralize. Sorry about that.

Steve stated (with an adjustment by me):

I agree completely. They scream for all those things but only mean it for them. Then someone else uses it and they cry about it. You just have to love Theocrats and their hyprocrisy.

Greetings

Organized prayer does not belong in school, however neither should individual rights be completely overlooked. Does not having a teacher lead a prayer mean a commencement speaker must be banned from speaking on the influence or their personal religion on his or her life? Or allowing individuals to pray in an organized manner of their choosing as long as no officials are leading the prayer?

No one should be forced to participate in or support a religion against their will and special efforts should be made to understand and be sensitive of the coercive effect a school setting can have. But neither should they be denied the ability to exercise that religion due to the setting. When a student acheives the highest ranking in class for academic acheivement, is chosen to speak at the commencement, and then denied to right to speak on their personal religious views that may have had a large impact on that acheivement, who are we helping and who are we hurting?
